Six Horses of Tang Taizong

The Zhaoling Tomb was once a site with important architectural structures that have since fallen to ruin. Archeologists have defined the locations of former buildings at the site as well as the positions of the six stone reliefs of the emperor’s warhorses. Though damaged, the horses are among the few elements that have survived from the seventh century. They were a major feature of the tomb site, commissioned by the emperor himself to commemorate important victories in battles that he fought before his accession to the throne. The six noble steeds have names and individual eulogies composed by Taizong himself. Today, sculptures of the four steeds are in the collection of the Beilin Museum and the remaining two are in the Penn Museum.
